Job Engine: A New WordPress Job Board Theme
Job Board WordPress themes are an area thats well covered by theme companies, most notably by the JobRoller theme from AppThemes which is one of my favourites. Earlier this month I was contacted by a new startup WordPress theme company called Engine Themes who let me know about their first theme; named Job Engine, it was another entry into this niche market. When I got around to checking out their website and theme I was very impressed – you can tell straight away that this is a professional company – their website is really well designed and theme looked really clean and professional.

Installation
Once you have purchased and downloaded your zip file, upload it to the your hosting and visit the “Appearance” > “Themes” menu link and activate the theme :
Once you have activated the theme, you will see it adds a message at the top of your dashboard saying “You have just installed Job Engine, we recommend you follow through our setup wizard to set up the basic configuration for your website!”
Configuring the Theme
If you follow the “setup wizard” link you are presented with a 3 stage process which walks you through adding a logo and favicon, then adding job types and categories and then choosing payment options and setting up a plan if these are needed.
Finally you have the option to insert some sample data which will populate your site so you can see how it will look with real listings.
Theme Options Panel
The theme has added a new menu item called “Engine Settings” which houses the theme options panel, if you visit this, you will see the first tab is “Overview” which lists all your pending jobs, new companies etc
The “Settings” tab contains most of the information you set up in the wizard so you can go back and change this – this area basically controls the look and operation of your site.
“Transactions” is where you can find all y0ur received payments and pending payments along with settings for the payment gateways.
Finally you have “Companies” which lists any companies which are registered on your site, A “Setup Wizard” link incase you wish to go through it again and the last tab is “Update” where you can enter a license key and receive automatic updates.
Front End Website
Once you have entered your settings on the back-end, visit your website and you will see it all setup and populated with sample jobs:
If you hit the “Post a Job” link you will see a nice and neat, 3 stage submission form:
If you click through to a job description page, you will see the full job text along with a company logo, location, and apply now link :
Conclusion
I liked this theme immensely – it feels really nice and clean and very polished. The theme option panel is a breeze to use and the setup wizard makes it really easy to get your site up and running with ease without having to dig though loads of settings first. The population of sample data is a nice touch with allows you to visualise a finished site so you can make design changes etc. The front-end is right up my street – nice subtle stylings and a modern layout will make this pretty easy to match to your branding without too much trouble.
All in all, a great debut theme from Engine Themes – I look forward to seeing what else they produce.

Ideas is a premium WordPress theme by AppThemes designed to encourage a feedback loop between you and your customers. Ideas allows site visitors to create a profile, submit ideas, and comment on/up or down vote others’ ideas. It’s ideal for customer feedback on projects, products, and services. It could also be a good fit for students to give feedback to teachers, group projects, and even internal focus grouping in companies with large teams or a lot of departments.
In this post I’m going to show you how to install the Ideas theme and what it can do for you.
Theme Installation
First, as with any theme, after you’ve purchased and downloaded the theme’s zipped file navigate to Appearance > Themes > Install Themes > Upload and install the theme there. Upon activation you will notice a few new additions to your Admin’s side bar. The first being Ideas Theme located underneath Dashboard and the Ideas custom post type located underneath Posts.
Dashboard
In the Ideas Theme there are two subsections. The first is the Ideas Dashboard. In this section you will find various tutorials on how to best utilize the Ideas Theme, latest news, and the latest tweets about the theme from AppThemes.
Theme Settings
In the second section, called Settings, you will find three separate tabs for configuring the theme to meet your needs. The first tab is for called General. In this tab you can adjust the theme color and header image, determine the number of ideas per page, max votes per user, number of related ideas displayed, and more.
Under the Emails tab you’re able to configure the automated emails generated by users as they interact with the Ideas Theme.
Under the third and final tab, called Reset, you can choose to reset user votes monthly, manually reset the votes or all ideas, and/or reset the votes for all users.
When you’ve finished configuring the theme settings be sure to click the blue Save Changes button before moving on to anything else.

Now that your settings are configured it’s time to begin adding ideas and receiving feedback. All you have to do is go to your new custom post type Ideas > Add New as you would for any other post type. As you can see in the image below there is a place for writing your idea, the official response, and internal notes. You can also create custom categories and tax to help sort/search your site’s various ideas.
When published all of your ideas will be archived under the Ideas custom post type similarly to any other post.
Conclusion
This theme is built on a simple idea that it executes well. It’s not going to be very attractive unless you want it specifically for creating a feedback loop. But if that’s what you need then this theme is a great fit. It very easy to install and configure. In fact, I’d say that if you’re not completely foreign to WordPress you could have your own customer feedback site up in just a few minutes. Can’t beat that.

Been an interesting week – I began coding the new WPLift after many rounds of designs and tinkering with the layout, Im pretty happy with it now. I think its looking likely to be a January launch so I can get Christmas and New Year out of the way, always nice to launch something new in January and try and set the tone for the coming year.
Of course the big news this week is that WordPress 3.5 “Elvin” was released. I’m liking the new media manager so far and other little tweaks. Had to downgrade one of my sites because an essential plugin broke but apart from that one, I’ve not had any other problems. Have you updated all your sites yet ?

For your average blog it’s not very difficult to keep track of upcoming posts for the very simple fact that there aren’t a lot of them. And that’s not a criticism, it’s just a fact. Most single author blogs publish at most once a day. Making it fairly simple to see what’s saved as a draft and when it’s scheduled to be published. With larger blogs though, blogs who play host to multiple authors publishing daily, keeping track of new content can become an enormous challenge. You have to track and organize new pitches, approved pitches, drafts in process, posts waiting to be edited, scheduled posts, and more.
Enter: Edit Flow
The Edit Flow plugin is a free plugin that can be found in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory. Its function is to help organize and optimize the workflow of a multi-author WordPress blog.
It accomplishes this goal by adding the following features to your WordPress Admin:

Installing the Edit Flow Plugin
Head on over to the WordPress.org Plugin Directory and download Edit Flow for free. Once you have the zipped file on your computer, navigate to Plugins > Add New > Upload in your WordPress Admin and install/activate the plugin there. Upon a successful installation and activation you will notice an addition to your WordPress Admin’s side bar. Click there to begin.
Configuring the Edit Flow Plugin
Once you’re on the main Edit Flow plugin page you have the option to enable/disable – and customize – all of the plugin’s features with just few quick clicks. Each feature has very clear and easy to understand instructions so it’s really not a matter of figuring out how to use the plugin as it is how you prefer to use it.
Conclusion
I found Edit Flow to be amazingly easy to install, setup, and use. It’s sort of unreal how well this plugin functions within WordPress. I could see it becoming built-in to future versions; It feels so essential to my process now. I say that in part because it’s something that Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, helped to create. Any time they get involved directly in the development of an addon for WordPress it’s usually a sign that they feel it provides their users with a lot of added value. What do you think? There are many valid methods for keeping track of future post ideas. (if you need help generating ideas, see our post on tips for getting blog post ideas) You could use any one of the numerous list-making or note-taking apps for your phone/desktop – including Google Docs, MS Word, Mac Pages or even the tried and true physical notebook. There’s no right or wrong way to do it so long as the method you choose works for you. That being the case, some of you may find that this handy little plugin – called Ideas – is exactly what you’ve been looking for.
The Ideas plugin is a simple way to keep track of future post ideas and the links/inspiration that accompany them. In the post below I’ll explain how to install and use the Ideas plugin.
Installing the Ideas Plugin
First things first, you’ll need to head over to the WordPress.org Plugins Directory where you can download Ideas for free. Once you’ve downloaded the plugin’s zipped file go ahead and navigate within your WordPress Admin to Plugins > Add New > Upload and install/activate the plugin.
Upon successful activation you will notice a new custom post type appear in your WP Admin’s side bar called Ideas. Click there to get started.
Configuring the Ideas Plugin
After clicking on the new Ideas custom post type you’ll notice two sub-sections. The Ideas archive, simply labeled Ideas, and Add Idea. By Clicking on Add Idea you can create and save your first future post idea into the archives.
As you can see in the image below the format is quite simple. In the top box under “what are you thinking?” you write out your idea. In the meta box below it you can include relevant links for later reference. When you are finished just click publish.
All of your ideas will be archived for later use in the Ideas archive. Simple as that.
Conclusion
Besides being very easy to install and get started, I found the Ideas plugin to be very useful. Personally I like having all of my future post concepts in WordPress. I realize that many people may prefer something that does not require online access, which is a fair point, seeing as you can’t always be online. But even if I initially capture an idea in Evernote, Google Docs, or even on a scrap of paper, I find that just getting that bit of information into WordPress itself seems to make the likelihood that I follow through with a full post more likely. And if for no other reason than that, I recommend this plugin.

Restaurant websites are a niche that seems like a perfect for using WordPress, in the past we have looked at various restaurant themes and plugins, and we also did a review of the brilliant HappyTables hosted service which uses WordPress and makes it easy to manage an online restaurant website. I have started building my own restaurant WordPress theme and was looking for an easy way to let people manage the menu when I came across the Free Easy Restaurant Menu Manager plugin, today I will be looking at how to install and configure this plugin.

Install The Plugin
Download the plugin and in your WordPress admin, visit “Plugins” > “Add New” > “Upload” and upload the file.
Click “Activate” under the plugin and you will see it then adds a new menu at the bottom called “Manage Menus”:
Create a Menu
If you visit the “Manage Menus” link you will see a lunch menu has allready been added, you can edit this or delete it and create your own from scratch :
If you click on the “Lunch” link under “Edit Menu” you are taken to a screen where you can name it, enter a description and grab the shortcode for it ( you will need this to copy and paste into a page to display the menu). In this free version of the plugin you can only create one menu, so if you require more, you will need to purchase the full version for $25.
If you go back to the main “Manage Menus” screen and click “Edit Categories” you will be taken to a screen to create catageories for your menu, such as Entrees, Mains, Desserts etc :
Once you have created any categories you require, go back again and click “Edit Items” and you can add individual dishes. Here are the sample dishes which come with the plugin :
Click an item name to view the details for that dish, or you can click the “Add New Item” button to add your own :
Unfortunately you cant upload images with the free version, so again, you will have to pay the $25 for the full version if you need this functionality.
Adding Icons
When adding an item to your menu, there are a number of icons you can use along with it such as: Spicy, Star, Trophy, Healthy, New & Vegetarian. If you visit the “Item Icons” in the main menu, you will see this is where you can configure these and add your own:
Placing the Menu in Your Theme
Once you have your menu created and all the items added, you will want to display this on the front-end of your website. To do this, grab your shortcode for the menu ( Click on “Manage Menus” > Menu Name ) which will look like this : [WP_Restaurant_Menu id="1"] and create a page or post. Go into HTML view and paste the shortcode in and then publish it. View the page on your site and you will see the menu you created is displayed :
Conclusion
I liked this plugin – nice no-nonsense interface makes creating menus a breeze. I wasn’t so keen on the restrictions such as not being able to add images for items – I understand the need to get people to purchase the full version but I think this could be done better by offering attractive extra features, rather than limiting what is allready in the plugin. Saying that, $25 is hardly a big price to pay so I think it’s well worth it to obtain a full supported version and support this developer. Overall I recommend this plugin, but would suggest getting the full version.
